Many of us understand that learning is not exclusive to just the classroom. There are a number of outside elements that shape us not only as academic students, but also as students of life. Many of those outside elements are people. In my case especially, I have had many people mold my malleable view of learning. While a handful of them were teachers, many were individuals I saw in a non-academic setting. One person in particular who has has shaped my view of education is my older sister. She is still an instrumental figure in my academic, and of course, personal life and without her, there is no doubt in my mind that I would look at education differently, perhaps even in a negative light even.
My sister and I have an interesting relationship for a number of reasons. One of the biggest reasons is the immense age gap between us. There are exactly twenty years and four days between my sister and I, which has made connecting difficult at times but learning almost inevitable. As my parents were extremely young when they had my sister, meaning she had to figure out the majority of her vast knowledge on her own. She put herself through school because she was incredible with numbers, finances, and academics as a whole. She now has an MBA and zero debt, which is impressive to say the least. She has always emphasized a number of things to me but one in particular is that education must come first. She can attest to how much her education has helped her progress and how it is the most important investment anyone can make. If you have someone that is living proof of the doors education will undoubtedly open, it is nearly impossible to make excuses as to why you should not be out there being the best you can be, each and every day.
